I’ve always been fascinated by the balance of the universe. Like has dislike, black has white, yin has yang, and sin has virtue. For every sin committed or bad deed done, there is a corresponding virtue. My concentration explores the balance between sin and virtue. My goal is to evoke different emotions within the viewer through symbolism and color. I also experimented with the space occupied by my sculptures, either on the wall, tabletop, or suspended from the ceiling.
My pieces range in size and purpose depending on the sin or virtue it represents. The compositions of the virtues are more delicate and fragile than those of the sins, adding the element of risk taking. The intent behind each work is to invoke the viewer’s empathy for the harshness of the sins or the peacefulness for the virtues. “Sloth” will make a viewer uncomfortable. “Kindness” will make a viewer feel calm and relaxed, and so on. Learning how to evoke these emotions in a viewer has helped me push myself and improve my sculptural abilities.
Each one of my designs represents the sins or virtues in an abstract way through symbolism and color. “Wrath” represents uncontrolled hatred, the desire to exact revenge. The sin is portrayed through the color red and the punishment for the sin: dismemberment. This piece is a compilation of body parts, meant to evoke discomfort and make a viewer reflect on their inner rage. On the contrary, “Patience” represents the ability to forgive and resolve conflicts peacefully. The virtue is a hourglass composed of two light bulbs connected through one base to represent a sense of peaceful stability and harmony rather than conflict. My concentration is meant to force people to reflect on their own life and acknowledge the effect and influence of each sin or virtue.
